SETTING GOALS FOR 2018

I never use the term New Years Resolution because I don’t know how to achieve a resolution. But I know how to reach a goal. Each year I set goals for every area of my life. This year is no different. One area I’m focusing in on this year is my profession.

I’ve been writing stories, articles, columns, lessons, and books ever since I was a kid, but it has never been my main focus. This year I decided I am going to be a Writer.

What’s that song Frank Sinatra used to sing? I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn, and a king. Well, I’ve been a teacher, a trainer, a tutor, a coach, a clown, and a comic. But underneath it all, I’ve been a writer.

This year I’m going to be a writer. Having been a coach, I know what it will take to make it happen:

1. I have to know what I’m going to write.

2. The writing time has to appear on my calendar every day.

I don’t like to wake up early and the first 90 minutes is my appointment with God. That never changes. Then there is email to answer and a few chores to do. So just about every day, I’m free from 10:00 to 2:00. One day I teach a Bible Study from 9:00 to 11:00, but I’ll still have plenty of time to get in 2 hours of writing.

My grandson and I have a Lego sales business and he comes over in the afternoon from about 2:00 to 5:00. So mid-day looks like the perfect time for writing. Even with a break for lunch, I could easily get in a minimum of 2 hours of writing each day. It’s on my calendar.

I have 6 writing projects I want to work on. I made a spreadsheet and decided that I will rotate from one project to the other daily. That way I won’t get bored. If I didn’t have a plan, I’d be arguing with myself every day about which one to work on. Now I have a direction and a plan with scheduled time.

Monday: A book I’m coordinating for a special event has to be finished by July.

Tuesday: A sequel to the novel I published last year . . . The Turnaround (Just started)

Wednesday: A book my granddaughter and I started 4 years ago titled Larger Than Me.

Thursday: A book I just started about my grandson titled More For Les.

Friday: My autobiography (No rush . . . I doubt anyone will want to read it.)

Saturday: My blog (Maybe a couple of times a month.)

It’s a lofty goal, but I like the challenge of it.

What are you challenging yourself with this year? I’d love to hear from you.
