Confession of a Writer

I hear so many people say, “I’d like to write a book someday,” but someday never comes. If you have the desire in your heart to write a book, it means God put that desire in your heart and you need to get started. I’ll tell you the easy way.

1. Decide what you want to write about.

2. Make an outline.

For a novel, you outline the plot and where you want it to go.

For a non-fiction, it might be the questions you intend to answer which might translate into chapter names.

Commit to write 30 minutes a day and figure out what time would work best.

When I wrote my novel The Turnaround, just published by Christian Faith Publishing, I wrote for 30 minutes every day when I arrived home from work. Then I got up and fixed dinner. On the nights my husband was on duty as a firefighter, I could just keep on writing as long as I wanted. Some weekends, my 30 minutes turned into several hours.

I started January 1 and my goal was to finish by June 1. I finished in April. BUT, I have a confession to make. That was in 1999. The book just became available on Amazon in 2017. Why, you ask?

I sent the first chapters off to a few publishers in 1999 and didn’t get a bite, so my manuscript crept back into hiding and was transferred from computer to computer for 17 years. In 2016, I decided to self-publish through Create Space on Amazon. But a good friend, who said she’d help me, knows me well enough to know that if I got frustrated with it, I’d be a pain in her neck. So she suggested Christian Faith Publishing. Working with them was the best thing I ever did. They approved my manuscript, which had to meet with their values and standards, and assigned a Publication Specialist to walk me through the process. It was terrific.

Yes, I had to pay some upfront money, but they have such a workable plan, if your book is good, you earn back the money you’ve spent.

So far, I’ve had nothing but rave reviews . . . thanks to my relatives and friends. I’m dying to hear from some strangers!
